Miss Purdy was a well known community leader involved in local and world issues. She was in the vanguard of the advancement of women's role in society. Thankfully, she was also an avid collector of local newspaper articles on these issues.

Dorothy Purdy was an only child and was brought up by her widowed father, who worked in the investment business. Miss Purdy never married. She lived in a house called "Purds" located on the Gondola Point Rd.

Miss Purdy took an active role in both World Wars. She worked as a nursing assistant during the First World War, being one of only eight women from New Brunswick to serve in Europe with the Volunteer Aid Detachment. In the Second World War she was involved in fund raising for the Red Cross. She also served as a Guest Children's Agent for the English children evacuees whose numbers included the Queen's brother's children.

In later years, she was associated with the administrative functions of the Canadian Girl Guides Movement. She served as the first Provincial Secretary of the N.B. Girl Guides.

The Rothesay Living Museum expresses its gratitude to Mrs. Hazen Inches who donated this collection of Miss Purdy's newspaper clippings, photographs and postcards.
